Dear All

You may or may not know that Pru Green has a planning application in to replace what was the St John’s Ambulance Hall with a Gallery and private residence.

There has been quite a lot of opposition, so I am hoping you might look at the project and give your support to it.

Of course you need to give an honest opinion, so I will give you mine.

Pru came to Wivenhoe some years ago and operates her busy Pottery business from her home in Park Rd. Many of us have visited her exhibitions there and wonder, not only at the beauty of her work, but how she managed to produce it in such a small place (room enough for a couple of kilns and little more).

The exhibitions take place in her living room.

The plans now awaiting approval at Colchester BC http://www.planning.colchester.gov.uk/WAM/findCaseFile.do;jsessionid=B4F696B662153C94FF09C0CD91DB6D7A?appNumber=110608&appType=planning&action=Search

(Click: “Make Comment”, then tick: “Support the Proposal”)

There are plans, 3D views and the “Design and Access Statement” from Laurie Wood, the architect.

They show a modern building looking towards the railway. I actually think it’s a great design, especially when one considers the restrictions that have been adhered to, and the very small footprint of the site.

But my real reasons for thinking we all should support Pru are that Pru is offering something to us all. She is an internationally recognised artist. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like her work. It is just beautiful. Her gallery would be an attraction to Wivenhoe visitors. We all know that Wivenhoe is known for the number of artists, musicians and writers it has, as well as many creative and vibrant people. Here is a chance for her work to continue to be produced in enough space to allow her some creative expansion. It is something that should be applauded and a huge contribution to the vibrancy of our community.

The opposition as I understand it includes the fact that Wivenhoe may be short of Community Space, and that some find it hard to find places to carry out those activities. The Hall as it stands is in a poor state and will need large amounts spent on it (over £100,000) even if it were available for public usage. A lot of us have seen attempts to raise funds in the past for The Engine Shed project and others, only for them to be abandoned. That is what could lie ahead for the Hall too.

Some of the opposition suggest they would like to purchase the hall themselves and return it to the Community. Whilst this sounds wonderful, the costs would make the project unviable. I would even go as far as saying that this opposition is made to just stop Pru’s plans.

So I am hoping you will view the plans and feel that you could send your support of it to the Council before 28th July (final date for the application). As always, the voices of those who support it are often quiet, but need to be heard.

Enjoy the moment where Wivenhoe can manage to have a modern, well designed and sustainable building which complements rather offends its neighbours.

I don’t know about you, but the more we can have alternatives to more hairdressers and estate agents the better.

P.S. PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO ANYONE YOU CAN THINK MIGHT GIVE SUPPORT

Best wishes

Jeff Firth

Hi Folks,

In case you didn't know, Wivenhoe has it's very own photography group that meets about once a fortnight. We're open to everyone - pros to complete beginners - and we go out as a group and shoot different subjects & locations. Every couple of months we have a show-and-tell session where we share our latest creations and plan future shoots.

The group is very informal (nothing like a traditional camera club) and is all about mutual encouragement and exchanging ideas etc. Last year we organised a group exhibition at The Wivenhoe Gallery, which gave a number of people their first taste of exhibiting their work in public. We also have a flickr group where you post pics and ask for feedback.

Best of all, it's 100% free (ok, we occassionally need a couple of quid from people if we're meeting at a venue that charges, such as the Nottage - but that's it!).

If you'd like to join us, the next session is a show-and-tell this Saturday (22nd Jan) at 2pm. Email me (photo@adrianmulton.co.uk) for more details, including venue.

Adrian

Just passing on the message that there are a few spaces available next year to join a small watercolour painting group who meet at William Loveless Hall between 19:00 and 21:00 on Wednesday evenings. This friendly group, led by Frank Baker (he has a profile in the Wivenhoe Encyclopedia), would love to welcome some new members.

Frank is a talented artist, and makes our evenings fun, easy going and informative. I was a complete novice when I started nearly two years ago but with Frank's guidance I was happy to enter some work at a recent St.Mary's Church fund raising event

I find it a great way to escape the stresses and strains of a busy life!

Let me know if you're interested, but please contact Frank directly on 823353.

Be seeing you, Phil.

I've been so impressed with young local filmmaker Sam King, that I really think his shorts needs a wider audience. Sam has kindly allowed me to post these up online. My two favourites are of the Sailing Club and the May Fair, both of which are on m'blog.

It would be great if any local group or organisation that needs some promotional video work carried out would consider hiring Sam's considerable talents.

My name is Conni Rosewarne, I am a fine art student at brighton university (originally from Wivenhoe!) and I am looking for artists in Wivenhoe to take part in a food project; the project involves an exchange in which the artist allows me to see their studio and answers a few questions about a certain practical skill they use in their work. My part of the exchange will be to provide a meal- I am known amongst my circle of friends to be a good chef!

This project is based around the ideal notion of a humane exchange. In our society food and knowledge are two of our biggest luxuries and in the west they are becoming ever more commodified, when actually they are two of the most natural luxuries we can possess. I believe artists hold a certain view of the world that can counteract this; the belief in truth, whatever that may be; something that is expressed through natural curiosities and visual expression. It is through these personal and humane exchanges that we build more wholesome and genuine communities.

I would like to document my time with anyone who wishes to participate through photography, writing and possibly recordings, but I am more than happy to negotiate how this is done! I am in Wivenhoe until the 14th of April before going back to Brighton for six weeks. I would be so grateful for anyone who wishes to take part, or any ideas or feedback that anyone wishes to offer! Thank you.

Hi all,

I've been running a creative writing guild on campus for about 4 or 5 years now and we're looking to expand the group to include Wivenfolk. We meet at 7 o'clock every Sunday outside the SU bar on campus before heading to a quiet room on site. Typically the members will have written something beforehand, it can be anything from poetry, plays, short stories, novel chapters, songs etc. We then take it in turns reading our work out before getting critical feedback from the rest of the group. It's proven to be quite a useful experience so far so I'd be delighted to gain more members, particularly those of a more senior age. Except for myself, we seem to be comprised mostly of students at the moment.

Please feel free to contact me for further details.

She believes that everyone has the ability to write well and encourages students to recognise their strengths and helps them to find their writing voice.
