After a lamentable 8 year gap (can it be so long?) Wivenhoe Open Air Shakespeare are planning to get a production off the ground this summer.  With the rest of the country performing wall to wall Shakespeare, we can't be left out.  The proposed play is "THE TEMPEST", and the currently planned week is 22-28 July, in the grounds of Millfields Primary School.

If anyone is interested in taking part - either performing or in a backstage/front of house/publicity capacity, there is a meeting thie coming Sunday 19 February in the Congregational Church Hall. 2.30pm for general information and discussion, followed at  3.45  by a workshop for performers. A casting meeting / workshop audition will follow in a couple of weeks' time. Directors will be Sheila Foster and Janita LeFevre.

How wonderful - I'm so pleased that you are reviving this Sheila. The image of the live performing horse from '93 is still very memorable ;)

I've put the dates over in the diary ---->>>>

Many thanks for joining the forum.

A great turnout for the first meeting for Wivenhoe Open Air Shakespeare 2012. Twenty-two folk gathered in the Congregational Hall, all with various skills and enthusiasm to offer. A five night run of The Tempest is tentatively scheduled to start on 23rd July, with Millfields School being the probable venue.

Auditions have yet to take place - it's not too late to step forward! In particular a young (ish) thrusting male is required for the part of Fernando. A few young (ish) thrusting local names were mentioned as possible recruits. Plus if you don't fit the above character description, then back stage help will be greatly appreciated. Anyone with PR experience would be valued highly.

This thread is probably the best place for now to ask any questions to Sheila and the other Open Air volunteers.

In fact people of all sexes and ages will be welcomed to the auditions for "The Tempest", which will be on 18 March - time and place to be announced here shortly.  It would be good to see more representation from teens/20s/30s it's true.  But the augurs are looking good!

    "The Tempest"
Still short of 4 male actors, one late teens/20s, others any age.
We'll be talking to people and workshopping  between 6.30 and 7.30 tonight in the Congregational Hall in an attempt finally to cast.  FIngers crossed.

    Wonderful - knew you'd get there ;)

...although slightly disappointed that I was overlooked for the dashing, young Ferdinand.

How could they have missed such an opportunity?  I suspect they've cast too many of these 'augurs'...whoever they are. I blame all this on 'equal opportunities'.

    The Tempest is... GO!

    Hurrah!

The cast held the first rehearsal on Sunday afternoon at the Congregational Hall. Much ground was covered. All parts have been cast, the music has been written and a slight change in the al fresco location should be confirmed over the coming days.

The production will run over five performances from 25th - 28th July. All prey to the great Weather Gods. Between now and then there are twice weekly rehearsals across a number of Wivenhoe venues. Once of these is a new location, Open Space, down at the Business Centre.

Thankfully I'm not coming out of my self-imposed 1986 O Level Drama retirement.

Good to finally meet Big Rosie.
