Almost that time of year again - here comes the Wivenhoe May Fair planning meeting, 24th February, 7:30pm at the William Loveless Hall.

Volunteers invited to get involved with this year’s Wivenhoe May Fair

Organisers of the Wivenhoe May Fair are inviting everyone to attend an open meeting at the William Loveless Hall between 7.30pm and 9.30pm on the 24th of February to find out how to get involved with the well-known free music and arts festival. The open meeting will also enable potential volunteers to discover more behind the scenes information about the event, which will be held on the town’s King George V Playing Field between noon and 6pm on Monday, 30th May, the last Bank Holiday in May.

Riggers, stewards, bar people and litter pickers are just some of the vital roles that need to be filled to stage the fund raising event that has raised nearly £30,000 for charities since 2000. In addition, the May Fair organisers are keen to hear from local businesses and traders who would like to have a pitch at the event or who can donate services to make the day more special.

More information about the Wivenhoe May Fair is available on the website www.wivenhoemayfair.com, by emailing info@wivehoemayfair.com or by calling 01206 820826.

Mike Freeman of the Wivenhoe May Fair said: “It would be impossible to stage the festival without the support of the community spirited volunteers who have run the event for the last 29 years. Putting on over a dozen bands on two music stages is a logistical feat in itself, but when you add organising the very popular cycle-powered cinema tent, market stalls, beer tent and healing area the people power required quickly increases. Being part of our team is great fun and helps to support the charities. We would therefore be delighted to see anyone who would like to get involved with the Wivenhoe May Fair at the meeting on 24th of February.”

The support of the community is obviously very important to keep the May Fair afloat, as well as maintain the unique Wivenhoe feeling. I'll be there on the 24th, and I hope to see some other friendly, familiar faces :)

Any thoughts on how the Wivenhoe Forum can find a role or place at the May Fair? This is the showcase event in the town. It could be a great chance to help build our online community. Bloggage over here.

Have a tent; get together with Transition Wivenhoe to power an internet connection; sign people up to the Forum there and then?
    I've got the tent ...

Bump, 'cos this is taking place this Thursday. This will be an open space meeting, which is a great way to work and co-operate in small groups, and then reach some overall group conclusions.

Wish I could make it but it's Funny Farm night.

Shame - if there is any talk of spoken word returning I'd be happy to assist again. Failing that I still have my Fairy Wings! :-)

Good turn-out, about 30 people there and some useful ideas that came out of the meeting will now be further considered by the committee.

I'll be litter picking on the day, watch out for the day-glow Marigolds :D

Many thanks to everyone who attended the open meeting.  The night was very constructive and generated some great ideas that our small team of volunteers will try to put into practice where possible.  2011 should be a great year for the May Fair!
