News from the good Richard Allen, Wivenhoe birder supreme:

"For those of you who are interested, there are 15 Waxwings in trees by the sailing club, they are also feeding on rosehips along the seawall giving good views."

    Happy spotting.

I'm still in search of the elusive Kingfisher. I had a conversation with some folk earlier in the week who spotted the chap earlier this month. Apparently he likes to hang out [cool] on the Rowhedge side of the Colne, just in front of the gravel works.

As for the seals - anyone?

Very cool for kingfishers in these temperatures... Was talking to Bob today, who lives in new house opposite the field drain just before the flood barrier. He had two kingfishers perching above the drain till he reckons the neighbours cat got them, but it may well be that they just moved due to the freezing conditions earlier. He has some lovely photos of them outside his house though. Fingers crossed the one on Rowhedge is one and the same.. but where's his partner?

Not strictly Wivenhoe related but I am so excited to have seen a single waxwing amongst a gang of redwings in trees by the river at the bottom of Castle Park today.

Thought I would never see one!!!

    Good spot!

I hate to think though that the Wivenhoe waxwings have moved slightly upstream, due to the Environmental Agency vandalism.

    Grrr.

BTW Puffin - two good places to see kingfishers (again it's a question of luck but once you get your "eye in" it's weird how quickly you spot them) are: Roman river (which means crossing over & walking from Rowhedge) and there's a sluice thing on The Moors (basically the stretch of the Colne you get onto after Hythe Station Road heading towards town). I've had happy afternoons and disappointed ones in both places.

Last month I saw a kingfisher flying down the river from the bridge on North Station Road in town though - didn't expect it and it made my day!

Yes - if not a twitcher I am at least a secret fidgeter :-)
