Terms of Use

Wivenhoe Forum

Please take a little time to read the Wivenhoe Forum before first posting. This will give you the opportunity to get a feel for what is acceptable behaviour in this online community. It should also help you to see if your particular thread or idea has already been raised, or even answered.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this community to post any material which is knowingly false and / or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violates any law. You agree not to post any copyrighted material unless you own the copyright.

We at this community also reserve the right to reveal your identity (or whatever information we know about you) in the event of a complaint or legal action arising from any message posted by you. We log all internet protocol addresses accessing this web site.

Please note that advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are inappropriate on this community.

The only exception to this is the posts from local traders to help promote their businesses. Our definition of local is fluid - Colchester probably yes, Braintree definitely no. We will be lenient with the amount of posts created by each local trader. Please don't abuse this. Excessive posts will be deleted as spam.

We reserve the right to remove any content for any reason or no reason at all. We reserve the right to terminate any membership for any reason or no reason at all. Please do not start discussions about which individual users have been banned, or offering a possible reason as to why they have been banned. These posts will be deleted.

You must be at least 13 years of age to use this service.

The Wivenhoe Forum is moderated by the volunteer team of @Patsy, @Glyn and @Marika. @Jason is the Publisher, but is not involved in the moderation process.

If you think that a post needs moderating then please contact a member of the moderation team by sending a PM to the Moderator acount. You can do this by accessing your Inbox in the top menu, and then the Start a New Conversation button. The Recipient is Moderator. A member of the moderation team will then be able to pick this up.

If a post or thread is edited or deleted, please don't start a new thread asking why. Instead contact the moderation team via PM. They are under no obligation to give you an answer.

You will receive a formal warning via a PM from the Moderator on the first and second time that you are moderated. Please consider the second warning to be a final warning. If any of your behaviour on the Wivenhoe Forum still requires moderation, your account will banned, your IP address will be blocked and all content will be deleted. You will not receive notification of this.

The moderators frequently work in consultation with each other and a PM from the moderators is not to be queried as to the identity of any particular moderator. Doing so will be regarded as attempted intimidation and deserving of a strike.

Please accept any decisions taken by the Moderators as final. Please do not abuse them publicly on the forum, or privately with a PM. Without a Moderation team the forum wouldn't exist.

The Moderator avatar looks like this: Wivenhoe Forum

The Moderators are also forum members, subject to moderation rules like anyone else. It will be quite clear from their avatar when they post as members.

When they do, any reference to their moderator function in the discussion is unacceptable and you are asked not to do so. Any users that ignore this polite request will receive a strike against their name.

Please do not try and impersonate a Moderator by posting up something ‘witty’ such as [Edited by Moderator because…] This will result in an immediate user ban without any warning.

Please only register to use the forum with one account. If we suspect that a user has registered with more than one identity without having sought prior permission from the forum host, we will ask the user which one of these profiles they would like to remain. Any other accounts along with the postings will be deleted. If no reply is received after a week, we will simply delete all accounts and postings registered by the same user.

Libel postings, defamation of character, harassment and threats will not be tolerated on the Wivenhoe Forum. If you feel that your own rights have been violated, it is your prerogative to take up any legal action.

In fact please don't use this forum to abuse anyone around the town, be they forum members or not. If you have a problem or an issue with Resident A, please go and talk to them. RANTING on this forum may be cathartic for you, but it is not within the ethos of the Wivenhoe Forum.

Wild conspiracy theories are amusing, especially so on a hyperlocal level. But if you really must post up your not very plausible arguments about how a public or private body is corrupt / deluded / taking backhanders - please have the common sense to also post up or link to the evidence to back up your claim. Posting up of rumours without any evidence to back up your claim will not be tolerated.

The Wivenhoe Forum is an online community and not a free resource for any journos or market researchers. If you want to write a story relating to a posting that you have read on the Wivenhoe Forum, please contact the community member who has first raised the issue.

Likewise please don't lift any copy from from either an online or offline publication, and then try and pass it off as your own work. Always provide an acknowledgement as to the original source.

The original author holds the copyright for each post. As a Publisher, the Wivenhoe Forum holds the database right.

This basically means that any other Publisher or individual can't simply cut and paste whole passages or threads. Both the Wivenhoe Forum and the individual user would be in a position to take further action, should this take place. You own your posts and the copyright for them.

The title of the Wivenhoe Forum should explain what type of content is encouraged to be shared here. The Wivenhoe Forum is not a place in which to discuss the Middle East situation, or anything else that is wildly off-topic. We will be lenient with the moderation here, but before posting, please do consider if there is a more suitable online resource for you to share your views on the Middle East or whatever.

As a word of caution, please consider carefully before you post up your own personal details. Although this is the Wivenhoe Forum, the World Wide Web protocol at the start of the url should be a bit of a giveaway. Do you really want complete strangers (and spammers) to know your email address or phone number? Please use the PM facility for exchanging personal details.

Please don’t share the details of anyone else publicly. Any posts that request the personal details of someone else will now be moderated. No strikes will be recorded against the name of the user.

The one exception to this rule is asking for contact details for traders or businesses. It is fine to share these online.

We will ban anyone who posts up the contents of a private message publicly on the Wivenhoe Forum. A PM should remain just that. This is a piece of communication that can only be seen by the users involved.

While PMs are private between sender and recipient, you as the recipient are free to waive this privacy if you feel yourself the target of harassment and you would wish the moderators to take notice. In that case keep a screen shot of the message(s) and contact the moderators in the usual way.

Please do not bump old threads purely as part of a compare and contrast exercise in the moderation process since the September 2013 hibernation period. Attempts to do this will result in a formal warning.

These new Terms of Use now apply to all forum members, regardless of when you joined. We reserve the right to change these Terms of Use at any time and for any reason. By being a member of this forum you agree to abide by the Terms of Use.

Please contact the moderation team if you wish to terminate your membership of the Wivenhoe Forum. Please state if you would like all of your previous postings to remain, or if you would like all content created by you to be deleted. This is final and cannot be reinstated.

Thank you for using the Wivenhoe Forum.

September, 2013.
